INTERNSHIP INFORMATION

Area of Interest: The Hampton Roads Show Intern
Opportunity available all terms.
Monday - Friday, morning weekdays preferred, 2-3 people
Wanted: Hard-working interns for the (innovative new) morning show on FOX43. You must be interested in new trends, local happenings, entertainment, lifestyle, cooking, technology, and FUN.
During this internship, you will:
- Gain an understanding of the time and planning that goes into creating a one-hour, daily television show by attending post-show meetings, greeting and helping situate guests, helping with set-up and clean-up, etc.
- You'll assist in segment planning and shoots, greeting guests, prop setup, and adding web content.
- You'll also have opportunities to assist at promotional events.
- Aid producers with writing scripts by proofreading and printing scripts and run downs, confirming guests’ names and spelling, researching business information and quotes, etc.
- Other potential duties include: assist in technical aspects such as running prompters, dubbing show tapes to DVD, and logging tapes for footage for the show as B-Roll or VO.
- Ability to work morning weekday hours is preferred.

Area of Interest: NEWS
Opportunities available all terms.
Sunday - Saturday, Various Shifts (Maximum 6 people per semester including sports intern)
- On Assignment Desk, answer phones, take information on stories and problems, listen to
scanners and learn how to notify police and fire departments, learn how to make calls
when trying to obtain valuable information.
- With Producer, monitor and log news feeds, help scan the news wire for news stories,
answer phone, help prepare production lists for newscasts, write news stories.
- In Editing, monitor dubbing of tapes, check with producers for changes to newscasts
rundowns, research morgue tapes.
- With Reporters and Photographers, learn set up of stories, work with reporter on covering
stories including shooting, editing and final on-air product.
Applicants must have:
- Good communication skills.
- Journalism must be part of curriculum.
Area of Interest: PRODUCTION
Opportunities available all terms.
Monday- Friday 9:00am - 1:00pm and 4:00pm - 7:00pm
Saturday and Sunday 4:00pm - 7:00pm and 9:00pm - 12:00 midnight
- Camera operations in the studio during newscasts and locally produced programs.
- Lighting for television (including lighting for a newscast, commercial shoot and an interview set). An understanding of the lighting board and the mechanics of a studio light fixture will be taught.
- Chyron (character generator) operation for daily production. This will include input and call-back operation of the Chryon.
- Ampex switcher and ADO Operations. This will include a basic knowledge of the switcher and the ADO.
- Daily studio set-up required for regularly scheduled programs. This includes checking studio lights, ripping news scripts, general maintenance and clean-up of the news set, and assisting the director in preparation of the daily newscasts.
- Understanding of the terminology used by the director during a production session.
- Audio operation for daily production. This will include a basic knowledge of the audio board and the daily checks that the operator makes before each newscast.
Applicants must have:
- Some required television production classes.
- Preferably a junior or senior in college.
Area of Interest: PROMOTION
Opportunity available December Holiday Break and Summer Break.
Monday- Friday - Full Time ( or part time minimum 4 hours a day, 1 person)
The intern will learn and be involved in the following:
- The development and writing of press releases covering all aspects of WAVY-TV, including new employees, special programs, awards/honors, news series, special station projects, etc.
- The scheduling and maintenance of promotional announcements on the daily program log by utilizing the VCI Traffic System.
- The editing of promotional commercials, utilizing Avid Media Composer computer editor.
- Organizing stations "special events", ie. talent appearance, tours, etc.
- The ENG (Electronic News Gathering) Photography process, including lighting, scripting, scheduling, and talent coordination.
- Assisting in maintenance of KIDS CLUB Membership.
Applicants must have:
- Some computer knowledge.
Area of Interest: PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Opportunities available all terms.
Three days a week (or more) depending on schedule requirements.
3 people - flexible hours
- Support for special projects
- Write and produce PSAs
- Work on production for special shows and documentaries
- General clerical work
Applicants must have:
- A genuine interest in public affairs.
- Good communication skills.
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for learning.
Area of Interest: SALES
Opportunities available September-December and March-May.
Monday - Friday 4 hours a day, 3 days per week.
- Work a minimum of twelve hours per week at station.
- Assist with sales promotional sheets.
- Assist with planning special projects.
- Will be involved with intense research.
- Assist sales people in preparation for Sales Calls.
Applicants must have:
- Strongly prefer sales or marketing major or related curriculum.
- Preferably a junior or senior in college.
- Knowledge of computers a must.
- Understanding of Nielsen Ratings Services helpful.
- Interest in advertising and sales.
